The University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center will be holding
final exams for its first and second-years students in March and April.
If you have a few days open, you can earn $12.00 per hour acting as
if you were a patient with a minor illness. You'll be given a persona
and scenario to follow, be working in an examining room where the
almost-doctors will perform routine physical examinations -- pulse,
blood pressure, eye-ear-nose exam and such -- and take an oral
history. Adults only -- no children -- with age unimportant.
Training day and rehearsal (paid hourly) Thursday 13 March 10a-4p
Exam days M-T-W March 17,18,19... 8a-4p

Passs the word to your fellow starving actors; it's easy work in a
nice environment, the coffee pot is always on, breakfast snacks and

Valentine Shredders
Fredric Koeppel in today's Playbook was kind enough to comment on my contribution to the 2008 Works of Heart auction for the Memphis Child Advocacy Center. The work also includes music from the amazing Amy LaVere -- her "Cupid's Arrow" from the Anchors & Anvils album (Archer Records):
... Or take "Valentine Shredders," by Jon W. Sparks, a work that's probably the most anti-romantic in the exhibition. A small valise holds a portable digital videodisc player; the valise rests on the shattered remnants of the original wooden heart. The four-minute film depicts two attractive young women sitting at a table, feeding their Valentine cards and roses into a small leaf-shredder. In goes a rose. Grrrr-fffftttt! Out spew the scraps. In goes a card. Grrrr-fffftttt! Out spew the shreds. Take that, love and romance!

'Valentine Shredders'
My film/contraption "Valentine Shredders" is one of the works that will be bid on Saturday (2-9) at the 2008 Works of Heart Auction for the Memphis Child Advocacy Center. A four-minute video is screened on a portable DVD player placed inside a small red Lithuanian valise. Tucked in with the player are the sentimental remnants of a failed love affair that have been run through a leaf shredder.
The shredding is depicted in the video that stars local actors Kelly Cox and Nancy Ellen Mills. The music on the video is "Cupid's Arrow" by Memphis singer Amy LaVere from her latest album "Anchors & Anvils" on the Archer Records label. The valise and its contents are attached to a wooden platform that also has the shredded remains of the wooden heart provided to artists participating in the charity event.
It's on display to the public in the lobby of Memphis College of Art through Friday.
The Memphis Child Advocacy Center helps abused kids and is about as worthy an organization as there ever was. More than 100 artists are participating (including a piece by my wife, Maritza Davila). If you want to bid on any of the hearts, the auction is Saturday at 6pm. Contact me if you want to participate.

In the distance is a blazing sunset in the western sky as a steam locomotive chugs away from the camera. We hear a distant bellow from it's whistle as it heads into the distance. The camera zooms out and in the foreground we see a silhouette of a lone man standing on a train station platform. He raises his hand to give a hesitant wave.
CU ON LONE MAN"S EYES
A tear swells up in his eye as he reflects on all the wonderful memories that are leaving him behind.
BACK TO FAR SHOT
The silhouetted man standing on the platform and the train, now far away, is heading into the sunset. A very faint whistle blows from the train. The camera fades to black.

ROLL CREDITS
After 7 short films, 1 feature film, a documentary film on the Memphis Belle, 16 one hour LTTM Shorts Fest television episodes, several joint projects with other production companies, and the recent premier of the Memphis Photo Gallery and Juke Box, the train's "Shorts Fest" has made it's last stop. Powers beyond our control have brought the production to a stop. What will remain? The web site will remain up for some time for everyones viewing enjoyment and for promotion of Memphis indie film, filmmakers and actors. Older episodes of LTTM's Shorts Fest will remain indefinitely in re-runs on WYPL. Minor productions by LTTM will appear off and on, but we are concentrating efforts on our major feature film "5 Shots". The Memphis Film Collection will always continue, but submitting has changed. The library still wants 2 DVD's plus any other materials for the collection (which has really been growing). Take everything to the 4th floor and go to the main desk. Ask for Patrick O'Daniel, he is the one in charge of the collection. Hopefully LTTM has been a great asset and will be remembered for sometime as a promoter of Memphis Indie Film. We appreciate all the great people who contributed to Last Train to Memphis Entertainment. All films that have not been aired will be kept for a hopeful future episode.
PS - The shorts fest had a lot of fans, and we know we will get a lot of people wanting to know why the demise of the shorts fest. All we can say is send email's to council members, library management, local officials, news media and mayors. Also read the Memphis Flyer article for this last week......

Memphis Belle - LTTM
After having two local television stations tell us they would air our Memphis Belle doc if we cut out all the content that makes Memphis look bad, and being turned down by MIFF, we decided to return to our first instincts and post the documentary on YouTube for all to see. As filmmakers we LOVE YouTube! It puts the power back in the hands of the people. The filmmaker controls his own destiny, and you the viewer get to see what you want to watch, not what someone else thinks you would like to watch.
The Memphis Belle- The Final Chapter in Memphis doesn't paint a pretty picture of the city of Memphis, and we knew it would be a hard sell. (We did lose one of the most famous airplanes in the world because of lack of public support.) But for those long time Memphians who grew up with the plane for it's 60 years stay in Memphis, it will be a trip down memory lane as you get to see old photographs that we dug up from old archives and hear the stories of the Memphis Belle told by the last volunteers before it was removed from the possession of Memphis.

The University of Memphis will host the premiere of the film
Somerville on Friday, February 8, at 5:30 p.m. in The Zone at the
FedEx Institute of Technology. A second showing will follow at
7:45 p.m. Both showings are open to the public.
The film was directed by Dr. Larry Moore, associate professor of
business law in the Fogelman College of Business & Economics at the
U of M.
Somerville follows the lives of residents in a quiet Southern town
just before Christmas. Over an eight-day period, what appears to be
an uneventful holiday turns into something much more.
Tickets are $5 and are available at the FedEx Institute from 8 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, or at the door at the time of
the showings.

suburban house. We would shoot 5 out of 6 days there, dates including
Feb 16, 23, 24, and Mar 1 and 2.
Description: Run of the mill suburban home, preferably single story
ranch-style with a large living room and kitchen. We also need a
bedroom that can be stripped easily to bare essentials (bed and
dresser) with no wild colors on the walls. And would like but don't
require a little boys room.
Along with the dates mentioned, the only other thing required of the
homeowners would be that the house is kept clean or cleaned up for the
shoot. It's written that it's kept pretty clean and picked up. (Not
obsessively so... just clean)

bill. OR, if you're a real estate person with a furnished rental house

IFC Films is the victor in the battle for “Ballast,” winner of the director and cinematography prizes at Sundance.
North American rights were scooped up by IFC in what was described as “a six-figure deal plus gross participation and a real P&A commitment,” according to one of the dealmakers.
Pic, the feature-helming debut of visual f/x artist Lance Hammer, had three other bidders.
IFC will put “Ballast” through its “day-and-date” pipeline, which incorporates theatrical, VOD and cable distribution.
The Mississippi Delta-set film features first-time thesps Micheal J. Smith Sr., JimMyron Ross and Tarra Riggs, as well as Johnny McPhail.

Willy Bearden's latest film project

Willy Bearden is a prolific filmmaker and author whose projects over the years have tackled local subjects as diverse as Memphis' garage band scene, Elmwood Cemetery and the importance of King Cotton.
His latest project sprang from a different font of inspiration. Bearden, who is from the Delta town of Rolling Fork, Miss., reached a point in his career where he realized that a history-minded filmmaker and storyteller is only as good as the written and visual record someone else has left behind.
Thus was born the idea for Bearden's latest undertaking, which he's calling the "Memphis Legacy Project."
At its essence, the massive project involves Bearden chronicling and documenting slices of life in Memphis, then turning over the resulting images and films to be housed in a local library collection.
As the first step in that effort, Bearden is producing a one-hour documentary about the 150-year-old Memphis neighborhood known as Victorian Village.
Other films and images will come later, adding to the civic tapestry.
"I just started thinking, 'Well, what is my life's work? What do I want to do here?'" Bearden said. "I'm very serious about giving back, because everything I've done has kind of hinged on the fact that somebody took a photograph of Front Street or Overton Park or Elmwood Cemetery or the Cotton Exchange Building sometime in the past.
"Somebody did that, and it somehow got into a public archive, whether it's in the Memphis room at the public library or in the special collections at the University of Memphis. I'm certainly using a lot of these things. So I started thinking, 'Why not do a photographic archive of Memphis? Like, here's a snapshot. Here's what Memphis looked like in 2007.'"
A starting point
Part of Bearden's notoriety in local filmmaking, art and historic advocacy stems from his iconic images that show the way Memphis used to be. His films appear often on local public television and trace the lineage of the formerly rowdy river town from its frontier beginnings to more modern times.

Colors Agency has new ownership, but will continue it's professional
traditions. Dan and Stephanie Williams are the new owners of Colors
Agency as of December 21st. We are working closely and on-going with
Annette Outlan and Jo Bracey as consultants. All parties have spent
time going over very closely the skills of each talent listed as well
as continuing to carry on business booking jobs.
Please note that there are NO FEES to be with the agency or classes
required to be with Colors Agency!
All procedures and protocols of Colors will remain the same. As
owners of other agencies in the Southeast, we have NEVER required
classes or required fees to be with our company. Because of our
strong success in booking on a regional and national level, however,
we are aware that competitors give misinformation about us. As
talent know in the Memphis market, many clients will not work with
union agencies, which is why we have chosen to stay non-union.
However, as a non-union agency, we do and will continue to book SAG/
AFTRA jobs. Also, producers in the markets are already excited to

by long-time industry pro Lisa Lax. The partnership will primarily represent

Lax brings 20 plus years of experience as a casting director, manager and

We’re changing our name and identity to better promote the hot-bed of independent film activity in Memphis and to recognize that we are now a destination festival!! Why “ON LOCATION: MEMPHIS”? We wanted a strong Memphis identity that was short and memorable and one that would definitely imply that Memphis is THE place to go for action and film! What a fantastic festival we’re planning for our ninth year! This condensed seminar will cover not only guidelines specifically meant for acting on film, but also useful tips for film auditions and behavior on a film set. Each child will get the opportunity to prepare scenes from actual films and then be put on tape for a mock audition, including standard slating. By the end of the seminar, the child is meant to have a better understanding of the way filmmaking works and use the skills they learned to become better film actors.
This seminar is meant to be not only a stand-alone tool, but also an introduction to more, in-depth courses to be offered by Slacker Central Productions in the future.
Jessica Powers is a local filmmaker who has been writing, directing, producing, and editing short films for six years. Three of her short films have been seen in the Indie Memphis Film Festival.

This weekend workshop is for storytellers, writers, or performers who have a written story in mind, whether previously performed or brand new. Designed to deepen the performer's relationship to the piece, the workshop will allow us to explore various aspects of the story using improvisation, movement, storyboard and character work.

North / South a solo exhibition by Grier Edmundson for Fall | 2008
Native Memphian Grier Edmundson's paintings evolved after returning to Memphis in 2003, having been away for six years. Reacting to his shifted perspective, the paintings he made in the two years following his return reflect his attempt to create a southern identity through a composite of ideals and images. Influenced by the writing of Flannery O’Conner, Jorge Louis Borges and William Faulkner, these intimate paintings are a collection of moments that simultaneously dwell on the subtle beauty of the south and examine its flaws and injustices.
Writer and curator Francis McKee has called The Glasgow School of Art's critically acclaimed MFA program, where Grier recently completed his degree, "a mental free state or republic of ideas". Glasgow, like Berlin, is a production city. A magnet for creative practitioners from around the world, it has that critical density of artists which enables a genuinely layered and diverse community to evolve. The vibrant artist-led culture is now complemented by a rapidly growing commercial gallery sector, which has emerged from these grassroots spaces.
While continuing his interest in the complicated history of the American South, Grier has used the distance and experiences of Glasgow to expand the focus of his work. His articulately rendered paintings serve as an examination of society through the juxtaposition of appropriated images, carefully selected from diverse source material. The non-definitive narratives that he presents undermine our assumptions of modernist history and create a platform for new interpretations of the images and the histories surrounding them.
Grier Edmundson holds degrees from the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Glasgow School of Art. His work has been in numerous exhibitions including Furthermore at Artnews Projects in Berlin, Grier and Luke Fast as F*ck: Tronjan Horse at the Project Room in Glasgow, To Hell with Dixie curated by John Weeden at Groeflin Maag Galarie in Basel, MAX 2005 at the Art Museum at University of Memphis which was curated by David Moos, and Forward/Retreat curated by Sarah Hromack at the Pinkard Gallery in Baltimore. We’re changing our name and identity to better promote the hot-bed of independent film activity in Memphis and to recognize that we are now a destination festival!! Why “On Location: Memphis”? We wanted a strong Memphis identity that was short and memorable and one that would definitely imply that Memphis is THE place to go for action and film! What a fantastic festival we’re planning for our ninth year! Looking to emulate and even better last year’s successful festival, we eagerly anticipate presenting the very best and brightest features and short films, documentaries, and music videos from Memphis, the United States and around the world March 27 -30, 2008 at Malco Theatres!

Extras for this weekend
Paul Andrew Skidmore is looking for extras this weekend for a film project. He says:
"The film is written and directed by Dianne Morgan. I will be serving as her 1st Assistant Director. The story is about an interpreter for the deaf at a city council meeting. We need people to portray deaf members of the audience at the city council meeting. (Knowledge of American Sign Language is not necessary, but if you know it, even a little, you'd be indispensable!)
The shoot will take place Saturday, January 5, 2008 (this Saturday) at:
Auditorium of Ball Hall
University of Memphis

We will need people from 10am until around 2pm.
This is a volunteer position. Some snacks may be available on set, but a meal will not be provided during this time, so please plan accordingly.

Theatre Oxford’s 9th Annual 10 Minute Play Contest’s deadline is February 15, 2008. There is still plenty of time to revise an old script, create a new one or anything in between. I am sorry to say that the Live From Memphis directory is officially broken. You may still search the directory and/or categories for Memphis Creatives, but sadly users may no longer log-in to update info. :(
We have been experiencing an amazing amount of growth this year and our system has reached its capasity. Our poor old 2002 server has been slowing dying over the last few months. I've attempted to prolong it's inevitable demise but I am now certain the server is on it's last leg. I fix one thing and two others break. For this reason, we will no longer repair this system. The technology is old and the server itself has seen better days.
So, the question is, what's the next step? We are working on several options; however, many of you know that LFM's finical resources are minimal so whichever solution we go with, it will be done with sweat equity and may take a while.
In the meantime, If you are an avid fan of LFM and its services, never fear - all other features such as news, calendar, the store and much more are still working fine. (Some features have been running off a completely separate server for some time.)
We will keep you posted.

Blog gone
The "Behind the Scenes" blog that has been around a few weeks has apparently folded. Although it endeavored to discuss issues pertaining to local films and filmmakers -- a perfectly noble concept -- it was essentially a screed written anonymously and uncritically accepting of other anonymous commenters. It was long on feelings and conspiracies, and short on facts and meaningful analysis.
Not that I don't appreciate its kind mention of my overrated acting abilities. But really. A blog with attitude, absurd accusations and neither credibility nor responsibility doesn't contribute much.
Anyway, before it disappeared this morning, Les Edwards of Indie Memphis Film Festival and Morgan Jon Fox responded to some of the more misinformed commentary. Since their remarks were deleted along with the blog, here they are again:

I'm the spokesman for the volunteer group that produces Indie Memphis. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, there are some factual errors in the post and comments:And here are Morgan Fox's comments:
1. Morgan and Sharon are not related. Morgan has won two awards in ten years at Indie Memphis.
2. Indie Memphis did not provide any financing for (A)way (A)wake. We did (through our parent organization Delta Axis) act as Morgan's fiscal sponsor for that film. Fiscal sponsorships are new to Memphis, but have been a great resource for filmmakers in other cities for a long time. If you want to know more about how fiscal sponsorships work, check out the FAQ section on the website of Film/Video Arts in NY: www.fva.com/fiscal-sponsorship/.
3. Each year we have a panel of judges. Local films are judged by out of town judges, and vice versa. The Film Commission does not vote on films. We have never tried to influence or challenge a judge's decision.
4. The Ron Tibbett Excellence in Filmmaking Award is given to a filmmaker, not a film. An important distinction. This is the only category judged by the volunteers who run the festival. Morgan was awarded this honor in 2005. He screened two films that year.
5. Will O'Loughlen was director of the film festival in 2002, and a volunteer in 2003 and 2004. He was not awarded a cash prize for "Ad Man", which screened in 2006.
6. Number of local feature length (over 30 minutes) narrative films accepted: 2004 = 6; 2005 = 5; 2006 = 8; 2007 = 8.
7. Number of local short (30 minutes or less) films and music videos accepted: 2004 = 15; 2005 = 29; 2006 = 33; 2007 = 34. The Live From Memphis Music Video Showcase was added in 2005, which is why the numbers jumped that year.
8. We do not have "unwritten" rules. All of our policies are clearly stated on the entry form that filmmakers submit with their entry. Our policy prior to 2007 stated that we considered prior local public screenings as a factor in deciding what films to accept. In 2007, we changed the policy to state that films with prior local public screenings were not eligible for competition. All of this has been clearly stated on the entry forms.
9. It is industry practice to charge an entry fee to filmmakers. For 2008, we have changed the policy. We will no longer charge an entry fee to local filmmakers for their first submission for that year.
10. The "money grubbing, greedy bastards at Indie Memphis" are volunteers. In 2006, Indie Memphis ran a $5,797 deficit on the festival. The 2007 numbers are still being compiled, but we lost money again. These deficits are covered by Delta Axis.
11. One comment said "... the last two years the feature winner has done just that [had screenings prior to the festival]". "Just the Two of Us" won best feature in 2006, and in fact had a prior screening. "Act One" won in 2005, and premiered at Indie Memphis. "Team Picture" won in 2007, and had its Memphis premiere at Indie Memphis.
12. "This year I think everything submitted got in." Hardly.
13. Another comment: "IM was showing fewer local films a couple of years ago to try and look more international." We screened a film from Italy in 2003, and a film from England in 2006. If memory serves, these were our only foreign films prior to 2007. This year we added an additional screen and devoted it to a program of international films called Global Lens. We are planning to run the Global Lens series again in 2008.

Last part, about forum like this needed for so so so long, I'm pretty sure the bath room at Murphy's at 3am through puke drenched hair on saturday nights beat you to it, but i dunno.
Naw, but for real...I am not related to Sharon Fox O'Guin, Indie Memphis didn't fund my movie, I don't regularly win cash from da indie memphis, I've won two awards in the 8 years i've been making movies, and for the last 5 or 6 years I've been trying my best to do what i can to help bring together the local film community through various projects, outreach, and resources attempting to give as much as possible...althoughhhh, I am definitely not perfect, and I know that all the organizations, and individuals in this city who make up the film scene have done plenty of things to make people unhappy...it's true...it's just that, it seems like a good way to help all that is by putting time into seeing what you thinks missing and dedicating said time to helping build, and facilitate the actualization of a vision/systems of support/spaces/projects that aid in the transformation of what seems or is unappealing into that which is more fit and desirable.
I've had many complaints over the years with alot of the organizations you've mentioned, I approached it all aggressively from the get go, and then over time I found that most of these people really do want to sit down with you and hear your concerns and that mostly it was my own dumbo-headedness that led me to being pissed off anyways...if you just talk to them instead of being reactionary and overly dramatic about it, it's pretty productive.
I guess the question lies in what the goal is...does one want to complain about things for the sake of doing so...or does one wish to voice complaints because they actually have a certain vision that they think would better work? The funny thing is, even if you have the vision, and you put alll your energy into trying your best to make it happen, as pure and "for the people" as it may be, often what happens is a long, exhausting learning process where you may indeed accomplish alot, however, also you learn alot. I mean, I have. With the Media co-op, several local filmmakers wanted to make a film festival that was alll about showcasing the local people, we did it for two years and then realized, HOLY HELL, putting together a festival is really difficult...blah blah blah. You put yourself in some form of doing and ultimately you open yourself up for so many things...including success, including failure, including (yep, yep) criticism.
In the end...where does it leave us all?
Everyone deserves to be put in check if they be doin bad thangs, but u know, a voice is a voice is a voice to talk about whateverrrrr you want, everyone should use it, however..........

Other films chosen as winners include films featuring Tim Curry, DB Sweeney, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and the directorial debut of Mary Stewart Masterson! Total, the festival gives out only 25 awards to split between 190 or so films.
