Artists come together for Katrina aid -- this means YOU

A benefit performance to help victims of Katrina is in the planning stages. A number of locals, mostly theater people, met Saturday at Playhouse on the Square to begin coordination of the event that is tentatively scheduled for early or mid-October. The Orpheum has offered to provide the venue and technical assistance, but beyond that nothing is definite. It may well be something of a variety show with acts from as many groups and individuals as possible. Actress Lindsey "Poor and Hungry" Roberts, who is heading up the effort, wants wide participation -- theater, opera, ballet and music groups. If a filmmaker has a short work to offer, that would probably be considered. Artists uprooted from their homes in the storm area may also participate. It hasn't been finalized who will get money from the benefit, but it'll likely be a group like the Red Cross.

Can you help organize or perform? The effort will require many skills, from technical to PR to accounting to legal to cleanup to setting up a silent auction as well as the usual song and dance. Call Lindsey at 830-1528 or e-mail lindseyrroberts@yahoo.com.
