THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI ADVANCED FILMMAKING WORKSHOP
DATES: July 23-26, 2007
LOCATION: Ole Miss - Oxford Depot
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW: The intensive Advanced Filmmaking Workshop will be held at the Ole miss -Oxford Depot and other supporting locations on the University of Mississippi campus. The workshop is designed to take high school and college students, teachers and other filmmaking enthusiasts to an advanced level of understanding and training in filmmaking. At the time of registration, a detailed schedule will be sent to registrants.
ENROLLMENT ELGIBILITY: Registration is open to anyone (high school to adult) who is already equipped with a basic understanding of filmmaking and is ideal for those who have previously completed the Ole Miss "introductory level" Filmmaking Workshop.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
* Provide advanced level editing training
* Provide advanced level camera training
* Provide advanced level directing training
2007 ADVANCED FILMMAKING WORKSHOP DIRECTOR
Kent Moorehead is an award winning and uniquely talented filmmaking professional who heads "Forever Young Productions, LLC" in Oxford, Mississippi. Kent was recognized for Best Documentary Film at the Crossroad Film Festival in 2005.
He works extensively as a director, cameraman and editor on films in both Europe and the US. In his 30 year career, he has worked on more than 150 projects, including feature films, music videos and documentaries. Over eighty of these films have been his own. Kent is one of a few exceedingly gifted filmmaking professionals who can work in all filmmaking positions.
He can effectively shoot while directing, interview while shooting and film with a plan for the editing. Kent's numerous other awards, honors, credits and vast filmmaking experience will undoubtedly contribute to another successful Ole Miss Filmmaking Workshop. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: The registration dealine is July 19, 2007. There will be an additional charge of $25.00 for registrations after this date.
TUITION CHARGES:
Residential - Dormitory: $425.00 - This fee will include the workshop, rooms, meals and workshop manual.
Residential - Inn at Ole Miss Hotel: $625.00 - This fee will include the workshop, hotel room, meals and workshop manual.
Commuters: $325.00 - This fee will include the workshop and manual only.
CANCELLATION-REFUND POLICY: Registrants who cancel their registration prior to Thursday, July 19, 2007 will receive a refund of fees paid minus a $50.00 administrative charge. No refunds will be given for cancellations after July19, 2007 except for validated exceptional circumstances.

number of music videos this summer and fall. The first will be for the
amazing band Free Sol, signed under Justin Timberlake's record label
Tennman Records.
We are looking for a wide range of people with any ethnic background
ranging various ages (minimum 18 years of age).

Synopsis:
100 Lives is a story loosely based on the murders of 2006 in Memphis, TN. The story is
driven by the death of a teacher's daughter who is shot and becomes the 100th victim and
what he decides to do about it. After having an emotional breakdown, he chooses the
camera to avenge his daughter and in the end discovers that the greatest change that one
can make towards peace is by changing the heart.

Darrell:CAST
Mid 30's(African American), quiet fiery demeanor, intelligent, strong but soft spoken.
Diablo:
Late 20's (dark skinned African American), fiercely gangster, but intelligent.
Barry Knowles:
45 year old African American, wild demeanor, similar to Fredrick Douglas. He's a
landscaper and is the parent who's son is beaten by a gang. This person should be
intimidating to look at with a warped since of humor.
Gabriella:
Daughter of Darrell and Ariel Jones, 5 years old but able to play 3 1/3, cute full of life and
charm, and bright beyond her age.
Ariel Jones:
Matriarch with the ability be paternal. She should be very positive energetic, soft spoken,
able to go from a mother to a warrior in a split second. She's an encourager and a leader
in her own right.
Mayor:
Like Willie Herenton
Preacher:
Fiery in the pulpit, soft spoken in the office. 50 year old African American, very
charismatic.
Michelle Jones:
Early 20's medium height African American woman. Typical attributes of a prostitute, yet
very articulate yet intelligent.
Little Twitch:

IFC Free Film Fest - Here! Send your shorts!!

Memphis is among 10 cities chosen as destinations for the IFC Free Film Fest at the Memphis Pink Palace Museum running July 31st through August 2nd.

The outdoor film fest will screen uncut indies, including Raising Arizona, The Princess Bride, and Napoleon Dynamite. It's sponsored by the Independent Film Channel (IFC) and Comcast. Local filmmakers can have their shorts showcased at the Media Lab Lounge; films should be submitted to the web site below by July 20th.

Micro Cinema Club Wednesday -- got a minute?
Indie Memphis Micro Cinema Club #31: This month's edition of the long-running series showcases "The Southern 60 Second Video Festival," organized by Fugitive Projects of Nashville. More than 70 shorts from around the world -- each less than a minute in length -- will be screened. It's at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Power House, 45 G.E. Patterson. CROSSROADS FILM SOCIETY PRESENTS: GLORIOUS MAIL
The Crossroads Film Society and Hal & Mal's Red Room presents a screening of the award-winning Mississippi-made mockumentary "Glorious Mail" on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. in the Red Room at Hal and Mal's, 200 South Commerce St., Jackson, MS.
"Glorious Mail" is about a New York filmmaker who travels to the town of Sinnaville, Mississippi to shoot his thesis documentary about a flamboyant antique dealer and the community's reaction to his controversial new mailbox. Filmmakers/actors J.D. Evermore and Alice Walker and other local actors and crew will be in attendance. Mid-South actors and musicians (who may or may not attend) in the film include: Turner Crumbley, Johnny McPhail, Ritchie Montgomery, Jeannette Comans, Pia Marola, Forrest Pruett, the Taylor Grocery Band, and others. Indie Memphis Film Festival -- Deadline is near
Deadlines are fast approaching for submission to Indie Memphis.
The application form can be found at the website www.indiememphis.com or at Withoutabox www.withoutabox.com. The “official” final deadline is July 16, but the special extended final deadline for filmmakers who submit through Withoutabox is July 31. Films submitted through WAB are entitled to a $5 discount off of the entry fee.

Last Train to Memphis -- July schedule
July's episode promises to be hotter than a gas soaked, cross eyed, redneck trying to light a cigarette with a blow torch. Starting with a behind the scenes documentary that features some well known bands before they hit it big, to another short film by the U of M shot on VHS in 1998. And, if you're old enough to remember and have been in Memphis long enough, we have the band from the 70's that rocked Memphis hard, Creed, with their song, Firecracker, to close the show. Our host for this month is the man, the myth, the legend, Jon W. Sparks.

Verified Person. We're looking for individuals to play ex-cons who
are protesting the use of background checks by employers. Call time
is 8:30 at 125 N. Main (@ the corner of Adams.) The shoot will last
roughly 3 hrs. We're looking for 20 extras and can offer each
individual a $25 gift certificate to Boscos Brew Pub.

Film project
The SouthEast Film Association and Movie Tao Productions are working on a
first of its kind project. It is cutting edge and likely to bring attention to participants.
Movie Tao Productions is working on a screenplay to be filmed and created
entirely by the SE Film Association and Movie Tao. The screenplay is going to incorporate a six-degrees-of-separation theme. The participating filmmakers will each be sent a scene from the script to film, cast and produce. The screenplay cannot change but the filmmaker can have the action and direction go however he or she wishes.
You do not have to go anywhere. Your location will be incorporated into the screenplay.
This is not going to be a paid production. It is strictly to help generate
awareness for the SE Film Association and the filmmakers that are involved.
We are not as of yet accepting headshots from actors as we do not have all of the
locations.
Filmmakers, this is what I would need from you if you are interested in
participating:

3.) How much time can you commit to this project?
4.) What is your typical genre?

Victor D Lorthos recently started a new television program airing on CPN17, the Comcast public access channel, that is dedicated to interviewing people working in film and television at both professional and independent levels.
"Memphis On Film" airs each Wednesday at 9pm on channel 17, available in the Memphis metro area on Comcast cable. Website is www.memphisonfilm.com and Victor hopes to post online clips for internet streaming so people outside the viewing area can watch. The first show, airing in June, features Linn Sitler, the well-known Memphis & Shelby County Film Commissioner, and Jessica Powers, owner of Slacker Central Productions and producer/director of many fine movies. Followups with regular monthly shows will have interviews with more filmmakers and possibly also with updates on the movie biz with Linn.

Perspectives is a juried exhibition of regional contemporary art open to artists within a 300-mile radius of Memphis. The exhibition will be juried by Michael Rooks, who has worked closely with established as well as young and emerging artists as curator at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Rooks was selected to bring a fresh perspective to framing and conceptualizing the art of the region.

Winner of awards at both the SXSW and Tribeca Film Festivals, this documentary the birth of the U.S. Air Guitar Championships as legions of aspiring rock stars live out their dreams on a quest to become the world champion in a strange world where musical ability plays second fiddle to virtual virtuosity.
The film features the intense arch-rivalry between the two premiere U.S. air guitarists. C.Diddy (David Jung), a samurai warrior clad in a "Hello Kitty'' breast plate and red kimono, emerges as an early favorite. But his arch nemesis Dan Crane, whose stage name is Björn Türoque (pronounced "byorn to rock") is not far behind.

Li’l Film Fest is a new kind of festival, highlighting local talent while showcasing interesting happenings around town. Here’s how the festival works: Every 3 months LFM staff members announce a new theme to the filmmaking community. Filmmakers then put their own unique spin on producing a short film.
The theme for the sixth Li’l Film Fest is “Say What? Your first amendment right to freedom of speech,” meaning that each film submission must somehow relate to that topic. The winners will each be awarded a $200 cash prize and will also be guaranteed a spot in the next Indie Memphis Film Festival. Additionally, the li'l films must not exceed 5 minutes in length.
Live From Memphis™ supports and promotes local musicians, filmmakers, artists, creative businesses, and organizations. Happy Anniversary LTTM!
One year ago this month it all started. LTTM aired episode 1 of the Shorts Fest on WYPL TV-18. Since that first episode, we have shown and premiered several great films, and helped start the Memphis Film Collection at the Memphis Public Library. We have had some memorable films grace our presence on the show over the last year, and we hope to see many more for years to come of Indie films and filmmakers here in Memphis. Our host for this month is the always lovely Nancy Ellen Mills. This month's films range from the artistic to the moronic and all are premiers for Memphis.

FABA! is looking to make a comeback. I am asked why? when so many people are trying to get out of Memphis and make way for California...well I can not afford to move so I just figure I will try to bring more outside opportunities here and create an outlet for local artist of all mediums. I am on the look out for serious minded individuals who would like to jump on board with me and tackle what so many have tried before, only this time...can we make it happen?

Feeling like a zombie? You're needed Saturday
We need people to play zombies. We're meeting at 1027 S. Rembert (the corner of Walker and Rembert) in Cooper-Young at 10am on saturday morning to get people in makeup, then we will drive to Hernando MS for the shoot (30 min drive).
The shoot will take several hours, so people would need to have the day free, but we will definately be done before dark. Anyone interested needs to wear the raggediest clothes they have, with no corporate logos or band names on them. These clothes will get messy with makeup and fake blood, so it's a good idea to bring a change of clothes for the ride home.
Any further questions, please call Christian @ 901-482-1153. Everyone who has participated has had a blast.

Got that film ready yet? Indie Memphis deadlines coming up
You've got two weeks to get your film in for the early deadline. You'll save some money if you do, but the final deadline is a couple of months down the line on July 16.

Festival Dates: October 19 - 25, 2007
Muvico Peabody Place Theaters in downtown Memphis
Deadlines for Entry: Postmarked June 1(early) or July 16 (late)
Entry Criteria:
The Indie Memphis film festival focuses on films of a “southern persuasion”; that is, films that have some connection to the American South. Some examples from past festivals include films made in the South or by Southern filmmakers, as well as films that deal with the Southern experience or themes/subjects that are particularly relevant to the South and Southerners.
All entries must have been completed in the past two years. In addition, IM gives priority to films that have not screened in Memphis over the past six months.
Screening Formats:
Formats accepted for exhibition are: 35mm, Betacam SP, DVD, and Mini DV. Films in 35 mm must have composite optical soundtracks.
Submission Tapes:
* Entries must be submitted prior to the entry deadline on VHS or DVD.
* All entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form, signed and dated with all information printed or typed clearly and completely. The Indie Memphis film festival is not responsible for incorrect wording in publications or on awards if the entry form is incorrect or not legible.
* All entries must be accompanied by a check or money order for the appropriate fee, made out to Indie Memphis. Entries not accompanied by a check or money order will not be considered.
* Each entry must be on a separate tape with an entry form and payment.
* Entrant’s name and address and the production’s title and running time must be on each CD/videotape. IMPORTANT.
* Do not submit works in progress or rough cuts.
* Do not include separate trailers, outtakes or bloopers as part of your film.
* Include with each entry a short synopsis of the film on a separate sheet, and one still photograph for use in the program (digital format preferred, if available).
* Screeners and still photographs will not be returned.
* Entries must be shipped pre-paid and in a suitable container. Insurance is the responsibility of the entrant. IM will confirm when the film has been received.
* Programming decisions will be made by early September, and we will notify all filmmakers promptly.

Pitch in for an artist
Local artist John Ryan is one of this town's best, but he's having trouble moving around with a bad right ankle. He's made his living doing art and carpentry and odd jobs, but has no health insurance. This Saturday at 8 p.m., friends of Ryan will host "The 'No Walking Around Money' Fund-Raiser for John Ryan" at the old Masonic Temple at 614 National at Summer. The $25 admission entitles the purchaser to music and open bar and a chance to win a new 6- by 4-foot horse painting by Ryan (pictured). Extras needed Monday
The movie, Tear Drops, will be shooting Monday, May 7th from 6pm until about 12 midnight at Fire & Ice. All extras are needed for the shoot. Release forms will be signed upon entrance into the club -- this is a volunteer gig, no pay. Come dressed as if you were actually going to the club. The address and contact information is below.

Alley, the featured painter for the Memphis In May fine art poster, was born in Memphis, TN, and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Memphis. In addition to being an artist, she is Director of Public Art at the UrbanArt Commission and pivot for the Legion of Zoom of the Memphis Roller Derby League. She also sketches, makes lists, reads, shows her paintings regularly at Perry Nicole Fine Art, and most recently created the artwork for the 2007 Memphis in May Fine Art Poster honoring Spain.
Artist Statement
Ordinarily my paintings are informed by the people and places most familiar to me – family and friends, or interesting shadows on old Memphis buildings. For this exhibit I stepped out of my comfort zone to offer viewers an exploration of unfamiliar territory. By depicting the small details and intense colors of a foreign country, and by portraying an audacious segment of society, these paintings feel a little off-balance and suspect. The way I’ve painted them, with acrylic and a little bit of oil on gessoed paper, as opposed to oil on canvas, forced less time and obsession spent on each image, and allows for a focus on the whole, rather than the individual pieces.

One of the most internationally acclaimed Spanish short films of the year, including the best short film award at the Sundance Film Festival and Spanish Academy Award nomination, young Alex Pastor shows us his innovative perspective on time and life. Divad wakes up after an accident to find himself lost. His home, his wife... everything is unknown to him. Maybe the answers he needs lie in the past.

The best European short film award at the Berlin Film Festival went to this striking and brutal student thesis. It’s the same gory ritual, every summer. Thousands of migrating tuna fish crowd into the Mediterranean on their way through the Strait of Gibraltar. This films has been the only selected short
film at the Sundance Film Festival 2007.
The Body Against (Contracuerpo) Eduardo Chapero-Jackson 17 min 2005 A young woman obsessed with her image takes a journey into the labyrinth of her own perception, turning her body into a prison for the world to see and living the self-destructive dream of becoming what she is not. This incredible sensitive film premiered at the Venezia International Film Festival, and many more followed to that, proving Eduardo as a Spanish filmmaker to watch.
One Too Many (Eramos Pocos) Borja Cobeaga 2005 16 min
When his wife leaves him, Joaquín turns to his son to help him bring his mother-in-law out of a home to do the housework. This hilarious film has gotten the 2007 Oscar® Nomination by the Academy of Motion pictures Arts and Sciences
Binta and the Great Idea (Binta y la gran idea) Javier Fesser, 2004, 30 min
As part of a collaborative initiative with Unicef, in which Spain’s most notable filmmakers offer their insight and perspective into the lives and minds of children all over the world, this uplifting episode by the highly acclaimed Fesser (Mortadelo & Filemon: The Big Adventure, The Miracle of P. Tinto) takes us to the heart of Africa, where little Binta lives with his intuitive father. This film has received the 2007 Oscar® Nomination by the Academy of Motion pictures Arts and Sciences

Last Train To Memphis May schedule
Next month marks one year of LTTM's Shorts Fest, and we have had a wild ride. Did you miss episodes 1-11? Not to worry, you can check them out at the main library. Grim Sweeper: Got your tix yet?
The Memphis indie film Grim Sweeper will play at Malco's Studio on the Square in Midtown Memphis on Thursday April 19th.
Here's Beifuss on the upcoming screening and a short interview with Edward Valibus Phillips.
This was screened at last year's Indie Memphis Film Festival and the place was packed. It's a highly entertaining feature by a group of University of Memphis grads and well worth your time. And I'm not saying this just because I'm in it.
There will be TWO screenings that night.

Basic audition techniques concentrating on communicating and
interviewing with agents, casting director's and director's and general
preparation.

Basic audition techniques concentrating on interpreting and delivering
in a short period of time.

May 15 ACTING FOR THE CAMERA WITH AN EMPHASIS ON COMMERCIALS
Learning techniques to make yourself stand out when auditioning for
television commercials and basic information involved when hired.

May 22 ACTING FOR THE CAMERA WITH AN EMPHASIS ON CORPORATE FILMS
Learning techniques to make yourself stand out when auditioning for
corporate films and basic information involved when hired.

CASTING CALL for independent movie being shot in and around the
Memphis area. All ages needed.
For anyone who submitted info before April 1st, would you please
call me. My computer caught a virus and I lost the March material.
Open auditions to be held at the Germantown Community Theatre, 3037
Forest Hill Irene, G'town, Saturday April 14th and Sunday April 15th
noon-5pm. Call backs April 16 & 17. Note: GCT is not affiliated
with the production. They are only kind enough to let us use their
space.
Appointments for auditions on April 14-15th are available between
noon and 2pm. Call Jo Galiata (901) 482-1726 to schedule. Open
call is at 2pm-5pm.
CHANGE: Children's auditions will be on APRIL 23rd from 4-8pm with
appointments available from 4-6pm. Appointments are highly
encouraged.
Due to budget constraints, this will not be a paying job, although
full consideration will be given in the credits.
SYNOPSIS: A family man loses everything after the brutal murder of
his wife. He begins abusing alcohol and prescription drugs and
slowly self-destructs and he begins hallucinating and witnessing
bizare murders. He struggles to pull himself together and learns
the awful truth about his life.

David Nichols mid 30's, husband and father-Allen's sarcastic friend

Landlady mid 50's+, crass slumlord
Evan mid 40-60's, nepotisstic warehouse janitor
Keith mid 20-30's, Evan's lazy nephew
Cheating Busines man
mid 30-40's
Secretary mid 20's, sarcastic and aloof
Ellen mid 40's+
Ray mid 20's, landlady's son

"Other Way Round" screening
Brian Pera's "Other Way Round" is finished and will be showing for the cast and crew and assorted friends on Wednesday, April 25th, at 9 p.m. at Studio on the Square. If you can, and would like to bring friends, I'll need to know how many people you'll be bringing, so I can plan accordingly.
There will be a 7 o'clock showing advertised for the larger public, so please don't get that confused with the cast and crew showing at 9.
