The Rural Route Film Festival was created to highlight works that deal with rural people and places. The festival, which showcases rural themes in an urban environment, features award-winning narrative, documentary, and experimental films as well as music videos. Based in New York City, the most urban of environments, the festival brings an alternative to the box office action flick so often set in New York or Los Angeles. We give city folks a chance to see what’s going on in the rest of the world, and bring a sense of home to country folk that have relocated to the city. We are also programming more and more international work, including films in this year’s festival from England, Siberia, Canada, Portugal, India, and Germany.

The 38th Nashville Film Festival (NaFF) is set to take over Music City for eight artful and entertaining days April 19-26 at Regal Green Hills Cinema. MY SECRET RECORD or How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Love the Biz, a documentary focused on singer-songwriter and international recording star Rob Thomas, will open the festival, with Thomas, his wife Marisol Thomas and director Gillian Grisman attending the screening.

Films will once again be screened in four state-of-the-art theaters at the Regal Green Hills Cinema. Events connected to the festival, including the opening night party atop BMI’s Nashville headquarters, will spread out around the city.

“Each year, Nashville Film Festival’s role in the local, national and international film communities and place among the top film showcases in the world is further established,” says Brian Gordon, NaFF Artistic Director. “Our artistic integrity has always been our top priority, and this year makes it clear that we can attract excellent films of all kinds that offer great quality, appeal and discussion, drawing filmgoers to a one-of-a-kind experience in Nashville.”

MY SECRET RECORD or How I Learned to Stop Worrying & Love the Biz traces the creative process and aggressive marketing campaign of Rob Thomas’s Billboard history making solo debut, Something to Be. Featuring a cast of superstars and CEOs, we are given extraordinary access into the world that manufactures rock stars and hits for mass consumption. The film features an incredible cast of musicians and industry “A” listers including: Carlos Santana, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Jeff Trott, Robert Randolph, Clive Davis, Lyor Cohen and Matt Serletic.

At release time, other highlights of this year’s festival include the Irish film SMALL ENGINE REPAIR, which tells the heartfelt tale of four men – one of whom is an aspiring country singer – who hang around an engine repair shop in a small Northern Ireland country town. The film’s soundtrack includes contributions from Bobby Bare, Jr., John Prine, Todd Snider and the Silver Jews. Director Niall Heery will attend the screening. The documentary I AM AN AMERICAN SOLDIER, by director John Laurence, covers the highs and lows of a year in the life of one battalion from Ft. Campbell, Kentucky as it trains for and is then deployed to Iraq. Laurence and several Ft. Campbell soldiers will attend.



KIDCINEMA

Among its many cinematic offerings are Saturday and Sunday morning films especially for kids, sponsored by Nashville Parent and Target. This year, the popular ANIMAL BAND takes its “Imagination Dance” show to the big screen for a unique cinema experience that will captivate children ages 3 and up as well as parents.

"We were thrilled when the Animal Band’s Jim Moore approached us about supporting the Festival,” says Sallie Mayne, NaFF Executive Director. "His incredible enthusiasm and positive message makes KidCinema even more of a HAPPENING not to be missed!"

Romance is in the air

Corduroy Wednesday has quite the Valentine's Day gift for you. This WEDNESDAY February 14th, we will premiere our latest project on the internet!

In the spirit of the holiday, it's a romantic 2 minute trailer for the SXSW Film Festival Grindhouse Trailer Competition.

Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are releasing a film called "Grindhouse" It's actually two movies packed within one in the spirit of the old bloody sexploitation films of the 70s. Within the film itself, trailers for "fake" grindhouse films will play that are directed by special guest celebrities (Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, etc).

And a contest was created for the general public to create their own Grindhouse trailers, with the best being showcased at this year's South By Southwest Film Festival by Robert Rodriguez himself.

So our entry will be our gift to you on this loved filled holiday.

The Memphis Child Advocacy Center serves young victims of sexual and severe physical abuse through prevention, education, and intervention.

You can help.

And, yes, it involves giving MCAC money, but you get some terrific art in return. The nonprofit's annual Works of Heart auction offers more than 100 works of art by local artists that you can bid on. There have been some amazing pieces over the last 15 years.

Maritza Davila, who is my wife and a professor at Memphis College of Art, and I collaborated on a piece in the show. She did all the hard work and I wrote some haiku that's part of the artwork. But you don't have to bid on ours ... just go and look at the great offerings.

Oscar-winning actors Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon are in the Memphis area this week to work on a new movie for Paul Haggis, the writer and director of last year's Best Picture, "Crash." Shooting begins today in Whiteville, Tenn., on "In the Valley of Elah," the story of a war veteran (Jones) and his wife (Sarandon) who go in search of their missing son, a soldier recently returned from Iraq. more...

Li'l Film Fest

Here's a reminder from the CA on Li'l Film Festival 5 -- Tribute to Craig Brewer.

Submissions are now being accepted for "Li'l Film Fest 5," devoted to this theme: "The Legend of Craig Brewer." (With one movie about a pimp-turned-rapper and another about a nymphomaniac chained to a bluesman's radiator, Brewer's projects certainly offer plenty of interesting content to work with.)

The fifth Li'l Film Fest is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. March 17 at the MeDiA Co-op theater at First Congregational Church, 1000 S. Cooper. The event is coordinated by Livefrommemphis.com, a Web site devoted to local film, music and other arts.

Movies must be 5 minutes or shorter (hence, the "Li'l" tag). A trophy and $200 cash prize will be given to the winners of both the "Audience Choice Award" and the "Jury Award."

Memphis Film Society -- new

In addition to filming my feature in Memphis, I am also in the process of setting up a new non-profit called the "Memphis Film Society." I am modeling this group after the famous Austin Film Society. At first, MFS will be offering free monthly network mixers, free monthly screenings of otherwise unseen films in this area, and parties at the two big Memphis film festivals.

Later (a year or so down the line), we will add membership levels, workshops, a filmmaker's grant program, and other interesting events in Memphis--all geared towards you, area actors, filmmakers, and film enthusiasts!

Check out our baby website at www.memphisfilm.org periodically to see info (though I will also send it to this group). What I need right now from you, the film community, is word-of-mouth advertising. The bigger the turnout for the mixers/screenings, the bigger a force we will be in this community.

Chris Ellis and you

Native Memphian Chris Ellis, a true working actor will make a guest appearance at Lisa Lax's scene study class Monday night. Ellis will give insight into the business, speaking on topics such as becoming a working actor, how to survive the dry spells, and going after the job not just relying on the agent.

Ellis, is most known for his roles as Deke Slayton in Apollo 13, J.T. in My Cousin Vinny, co-starring in October Sky and so many more. You can also see him this Tuesday night in Veronica Mars and Friday night in Vegas with James Caan.

LTTM for Feb

We have re-tooled the LTTM Shorts Festival. Beginning with the February edition we will feature a different guest host each month to provide exposure for local actors. This month's host is Wasabi Jones, an actor whose resume includes such films as Rookie Bookie, Service With a Smile, Bad People, A Waste of 02, Split Decision, Southern Comfort and most recently, Curbside Confessions. Carroll’s new body of work makes use of the city of Memphis not only as a physical original but also a cultural, social-political and economic original as well – a site of authenticity. All of the works in the exhibition have the subject of impersonation as their conceptual and philosophical basis. Included in the exhibition will be ME LIKE BLACK, two neon signs that are inverted mistakes that reference the 1960s book Black Like Me by white journalist John Howard Griffin, a civil-rights activist and friend of Dr. King who disguised himself as a black man and chronicled the experience. Four new silkscreen paintings produced with Brand X Editions will be shown from Carroll’s One Star Press series You and Me is based on the difference between how we see ourselves and how we are seen by others. During the week before the exhibition’s opening, the performance Whatever It Takes, an impersonation of the escaped Haley, the female polar bear that FedEx relocated from Chicago to the Memphis Zoo, will take place at the Power House. On the opening night Carroll will become the subject and object of the artwork during a special performance.

The Rural Route Film Festival was created to highlight works that deal with rural people and places. The festival, which showcases rural themes in an urban environment, features award-winning narrative, documentary, and experimental films as well as music videos. Based in New York City, the most urban of environments, the festival brings an alternative to the box office action flick so often set in New York or Los Angeles. Drew Richcreek needs a few people to volunteer as extras. A new reality show called “Bodog’s Battle of the Bands” will be filming in Memphis this weekend. They will be creating a scene that looks like a press conference for the competing bands to interview in front of. They are looking for extras or volunteers some of whom may be fed questions to ask the bands. Filming will be Saturday the 27th from 9:30AM till 1:00pm at the Gibson Lounge. This is strictly volunteer -- no pay.

Clark/Carter and Pitts take the Snake

Black Snake Moan trailer winners were featured in a story in the Memphis Daily News:

John Paul Clark, a freelance cinematographer who recently graduated from the University of Memphis, and Daniel Carter, a screenwriter with a couple of semesters to go at U of M, won a promotional contest coinciding with the release of "Black Snake Moan," Brewer's new film soaked with images of the blues and the gritty side of Southern culture.

Clark and Carter, both in their early 20s, won the grand prize, the trip to Sundance. First prize went to Rod Pitts of Pittstop Productions, a Memphis-based film production company. He'll get to attend the premiere of "Black Snake Moan," which Brewer said probably will be held in New York City.

"The fact they both are from Memphis floors me, because I did not know that when I chose the two," Brewer said. "The trailer was just another way to have fun.

"We knew that we eventually wanted to launch a very user-friendly campaign, where people could get into the movie, contribute, get in on the fun and then talk about it. The studio sees it as a marketing tool. I see it as, 'Oh, wow, we get to take two young filmmakers, one gets to go to Sundance, one gets to go to the premiere.'"

Memphis + film = Excellent!

I've been saying that moviemakers in Memphis and the Mid-South had a great 2006 and that we'll have a terrific 2007. Now MovieMaker magazine puts us as No. 7 in the top 10 movie cities in the country for 2007.

Told you so.

Here are excerpts from Mike Lollar's story in the CA:

The magazine's winter issue, which will be released today at the Sundance Film Festival, is Memphis' third appearance in the periodical, which has a circulation of 54,000 readers, primarily independent filmmakers.

Memphis received an honorable mention in 2005 and was ranked 10th last year.

"I think we can all be proud from the mayors to the film commission to the community that we're ranked so high on such a prestigious list," said Memphis and Shelby County film commissioner Linn Sitler.

She attributed part of the ranking to film incentive legislation passed last year. ...

In the MovieMaker article, [Craig Brewer] says, "I love the city, but it's the character of the people that truly inspires me."

Of the commission, he says, "You will never find a more dedicated film commission in the country. I try to find projects that must be shot in Memphis just so I can work with Linn Sitler."

Sitler helped lobby the legislature for the incentive program, which set aside $10 million to help fund projects and also provide bonuses to film companies that spend at least $1 million in Tennessee.

Sitler said the incentives are less than those offered by the Shreveport-Bossier City, La., area, which ranked No. 6 on this year's list and has quickly become one of the busiest filming locations in the country.

New state film commissioner

Here's the announcement in the Tennessean naming Perry Gibson as executive director of the Tennessee Film, Entertainment and Music Commission. Her statement:

"One of my first priorities as the director of this commission will be to get the new incentives program set up properly so that we can both aggressively market Tennessee's wide-ranging assets to the entertainment industry, while also growing this important part of Tennessee's economy. We need to get this program set up correctly, and quickly, so that it will be an attractive program for the industry, and will produce positive results for the people of Tennessee - creating more jobs and more revenue for our state.

"Throughout my years working in the commercial real estate business in California, I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to develop relationships with a number of entertainment industry executives. I look forward to having the chance to build on those relationships here in Tennessee."

Now, the worry is that the package will die a slow death, made restrictive enough to scare away any potential applicants. With that comes the fear that the governor’s office might dismantle the film commission altogether or fold it under another department, such as the Office of Economic and Community Development—thus giving the state’s film industry even less in its puny arsenal.

David Bennett resigns under pressure

David Bennett, executive director of the Tennessee Film, Entertainment and Music Commission has been dumped -- given a choice of resigning or being fired by Gov. Phil Bredesen. What will this do to the state's struggle to bring in more film production? Bennett was one of the good guys who labored mightily to get the General Assembly on board with a $10 million incentive package that passed last year.

Acting lessons

Suzanna Leigh is offering classes for stage and film actors with some experience. Suzanna has been in numerous productions and co-starred with Elvis in "Paradise, Hawaiian Style." She is also an author and still performs.

The classes are not for beginners and are limited to six attendees. Classes meet Saturdays at 12:30 pm. Cost is $250 for six of the workshops (or $42 per session) that last at least an hour each.

Li'l Film Fest lineup -- coming Saturday

Live From Memphis™ is announcing the 4th and final round of Li’l Film Fest for 2006. The festival is Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 2pm at the Memphis Digital Arts Co-operative (1000 S. Cooper Memphis, TN 38104).

LFM thanks the Memphis & Shelby County Film & Television Commission for their support of the Li’l Film Fest: Beginning this quarter, they have generously agreed to provide the awards for the festival, including a new “Jury Award” (in addition to the “Audience Choice Award”). Li’l Film Fest is a new kind of festival, highlighting local talent while showcasing interesting happenings around town. Here’s how the festival works: Every 3 months LFM staff members announce a new theme to the filmmaking community. Filmmakers then put their own unique spin on producing a short film.

The theme for the fourth Li’l Film Fest is “politically incorrect holidays,” meaning that each film submission must somehow relate to that topic. The winners will each be awarded a $200 cash prize and will also be guaranteed a spot in the next Indie Memphis Film Festival. Additionally, the li'l films must not exceed 5 minutes in length.

Wednesday: Micro Cenema Club (free!)

Indie Memphis, organizer of the annual Soul of Southern Film Festival, is featuring works from NextFrame, the University Film and Video Association’s (UFVA) touring festival of international student film and video at the next Micro Cinema Club screening, Wednesday, December 13, 7:30 p.m., Power House gallery, 45 G.E. Patterson. Admission is free and open to everyone.

The December 13 lineup will feature 10 short animated films:

FUGA (Fugue), a man’s encounter with childhood and fleeting memories, directed by Or Moran of the Bezalel Academy of Art & Design, Israel.

Unwilled Inheritance: A Portrait of Three Generations, provides an emotional look at the filmmakers’ distant relationship with his father that is meticulously hand-crafted. Directed by Nathan Broaddus of Hampshire College, MA, this short took second place in the 2006 festival.

Ring of Fire, directed by Rini Yun Keagy of Temple University, PA, explores the shape of things as a volcano loses its head in Indonesia.

Flight, directed by Andrew Allen of University of Washington, WA, provides a condensed history of aviation and man’s fascination in reaching the skies.

In a Distance, But Within View, directed by You-Jin Lee from Rhode Island School of Design, RI, is a visual poem in short stop animation.

Garbus (Hunchback), directed by Joanna Polak, Akademia Sztuk Pieknych, Poland, is a poignant tale about society’s outcast noted for its moving black and white hand-drawn animation.

Latent Sorrow, directed by Shon Kim, of Cal Arts, CA, fuses the abstract with the literal.

Monster, directed by Michaela Ostadalova, Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Slovakia, and 2006 first place winner, highlights the moment when you discover a monster in your house.

Say Yesss, directed by Christopher Thomas, Temple University, PA, takes a close look at insect love.

Telekontar, directed by Galit Weisberg, Tel-Hai Rodman College, Israel, follows an alien in his journey through malicious yet enchanting landscapes.

NextFrame, now in its fifteenth year, is recognized as the world’s premiere touring festival for showcasing student work and promising visionaries of the next generation of filmmaking. For more information about NextFrame, visit www.temple.edu/nextframe .

The Indie Memphis Micro Cinema Club is focused on showing short films—those that are shorter in length than a feature film—of independent filmmakers from across the globe to promote indie artists and expose audiences to the diverse array of interesting films that before now have never made it to the Memphis market. The Micro Cinema Club is held the second Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Power House, admission is free. December’s screening is approximately 60 minutes with popcorn and beverages provided. Donations are recommended.

Smart City on indie movies

Worth your time is a visit to the Smart City Memphis blog.

It reports that the organization CEOs For Cities has issued City Vitals -- indicators about the largest 50 MSA’s in several categories.

An excerpt:

Memphis tended to rank in the lower middle in most of the rankings, but in the category of distinctiveness, we recorded our strong marks. One of these was the Weirdness Index where we were 19th among the 50 metro areas.

In ... the distinctiveness category, Memphis achieved its highest ranking - #4 in the category of “Movie Variety.” For this, cities were ranked according to their variances between local movie attendance and national movie attendance for the top 60 motion pictures nationally. Perhaps, here, we should call this the Craig Brewer Factor, because clearly, Memphians are drawn to off-beat, indie productions, which should be a pretty obvious hint to the competitive beachhead we could establish in that industry.

Toast to Living History on Thursday

In celebration of some of the esteemed artisans in our community, True Story Pictures is hosting “A Toast to Living History: The Arts Interviews DVD Release Party & Wine Tasting,” on Thursday, December 7th from 5:30 to 8:30pm in the main gallery at Memphis College of Art in Overton Park. The public is invited to attend.

This dynamic event will celebrate Memphis artists Billy Price Carroll, Larry Edwards, George Hunt, Dick Knowles, Marjorie Liebman, Veda Reed, Murray Riss, Ted Rust, Dolph Smith, Agnes Stark, Mahaffey White, Ernest Withers, and Steve Yee. These artists will be the honored guests for the evening, and event attendees will have an opportunity to meet them and offer them a celebratory toast to their accomplishments.

The event will offer a tasting of the fine wines of Bernardus Winery in Carmel Valley – the Marinus, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc - and savory hors d’oeuvres, cheeses, and desserts selected for their pairing with the wines. Attendees will be able to purchase the newly released DVDs of The Arts Interviews: Series One, in which the artists discuss their lives and creative work. These beautifully designed DVDs (there are 10 DVDs in Series One) each feature an individual artist and include an in-depth video interview and a slide show of the artist’s work.

At the event, attendees will also be able to view an on-going presentation of The Arts Interviews documentary (a compilation that includes highlights from each of the interviews), which will be showing on a loop in two different rooms off the main gallery.

Studio nixed

Village Roadshow Pictures, a film company behind the Matrix trilogy and other hits, won't be opening a regional headquarters in Memphis.

The company's request for $5 million in city-county incentives, plus increased state incentives above those already flowing from 2006 film legislation, doomed a deal that had been in negotiations for months. It had been touted since the summer as a potential entertainment and economic coup, creating a stream of made-in-Memphis films and some $250 million in production spending over five years.

"It was an innovative concept if the terms had been realistic and workable, but they weren't," said Linn Sitler, Memphis and Shelby County Film & Television commissioner.

The company's proposed terms were rejected Wednesday in a letter to Greg Basser, CEO of Village Roadshow Entertainment Group USA, from Sitler and Tennessee Film, Entertainment and Music Commission executive director David Bennett.

Bennett said the Memphis initiative was never a priority for Village Roadshow. Asked if the company was seriously thinking of opening production facilities in Memphis, he said: "I don't think so. I think there was a possibility that it could have occurred if they had gotten everything they had asked for ...

"We don't throw money out in advance to bait companies to come here, and that's basically what they were asking for. It's typical of an economic development deal that the company coming in asks for the moon and sees if they can get it."

Wednesday's letter noted that Village Roadshow was seeking incentives that "would rank among the most generous granted by any state in this country."

In the letter and in a phone interview, Sitler expressed the hope that Memphis and Village Roadshow could "partner successfully at a later date," perhaps resulting in the company shooting a movie here.

But it appears there was no chance of local and state government accepting Village Roadshow's terms for the regional headquarters: "It's asking for too much," Sitler said.

In addition to seeking city-county funding and increased state incentives, Village Roadshow apparently halved the amount of money it would spend in-state to $125 million over five years.

Also, according to Village Roadshow's proposed terms, the company wouldn't guarantee in-state spending. Instead, it used such phrases as "with a goal of" and "every effort will be used."

But Rey Flemings, who led the Village Roadshow recruitment when he was president of the nonprofit Memphis Music Foundation, disagreed with Bennett.

"Village Roadshow's interest in getting this done was sincere," Flemings said. "They're a global company. Whenever they look at doing significant blocks of production, they have to weigh all of the financial incentives."

Flemings left the foundation in September to join Justin Timberlake's organization as the homegrown pop star seeks to relaunch Stax Records.

The Stax relaunch -- which has yet to be officially announced -- would be a partnership with California-based Concord Music Group, whose owners -- Norman Lear and Hal Gaba -- own part of Village Roadshow.

Brewer's 'Moan' going to Sundance

Memphis filmmaker Craig Brewer will return to the Sundance Film Festival for the premiere of "Black Snake Moan," the $13 million followup to his Oscar-winning "Hustle & Flow," festival officials announced Thursday. The festival is Jan. 18-28 in Park City, Utah.

"Black Snake," with Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci and a host of Memphis talent -- is one of 17 movies screening in the out-of-competition "Premieres" category of the festival, devoted to "the latest work from established American and international directors."

Thanks and oops

Thanks to those hardy souls who came to the screening of Memphis Muck and the incredible 2006 Music Video collection produced by Live From Memphis. I apologize again for the technical snafu that only let us see about two thirds of the Muck doc. The software and hardware perpetrators are being tried in a sham court and will be executed immediately upon sentencing.

Very special thanks to Christopher Reyes and Sarah Fleming of Live From Memphis for providing the Music Videos that were screened last month at the Indie Memphis Film Festival. You can see those videos here, but there was nothing like seeing them on the semi-big screen at the MeDiA Co-op. Directors John Michael McCarthy, Christopher Reyes, Clayton Hurley, Banner Gwin and Waheed alQawasmi were among several contributing work that was innovative, startling and memorable.

Another significant thank you to the MeDiA Co-op for being what it is. It provides space and resources for film makers and film lovers. It's been an essential part of the Memphis indie movie community and deserves your support (especially the financial kind).
