hi/lo film festival 2006 touring program
Originally organized in 1997 by the San Francisco production company and comedy collective Killing my Lobster the hi/lo film festival (high concept, low budget) has evolved into a major West Coat showcase for independent low-budget filmmakers. The hi/lo film festival continues to prove that big imaginations are more important than fat wallets.

San Francisco cartoonist and satirist Lev returns to hilo with 2 new episodes in his life-long chronicle of the socially awkward, the perpetually uncoordinated, and the sympathetically perplexed. 7 min. animation
Snakeman – John Inglis
A grizzly Australian snake-owner and the world’s sissiest cameraman square off in what could be the world’s worst idea for a short film. This is the film the folks at Animal Planet don’t want you to even think about. 7 min.
Under The Roller Coaster – Lila Place
Documentaries are successful because of a compelling character and the brassy, beer-swilling, chain-smoking woman at the center of this one is as riveting as they come. The fact that she lived most of her life in a house underneath a Coney Island rollercoaster is just gravy. 16 min.
The V Party – Michelle Dean
The nation’s foremost political consultants Warren Dinkly and Suzanne Agby present their can’t miss pitch to get apathetic voters pumped and ready for the party. 5 min.

Video art

Who do you know in the region that works in this discipline? Not filmmaking so much, although the line is not always easily drawn. But art using video as the medium. Let me know.

Casting for local indie

I had written about doing a series a while back and we are getting ready to film a short to get some more interest (money) behind it.

However, there are only three speaking parts available and we will know about extras as we story board. I need to let you know this on the front end. This is not a paying gig and the tape will be used in everything from a couple of contests as well to show investors to put up the money. You will get your own custom set of vampire fangs and something for your reel out of it (Except fangs for the yuppie). If the pitch is successful, then there might be a longer-term part out of it. This is not a full pilot episode, but may result in one.

Justin Gullett -- go, man, go

In today's CA:

Justin Gullett, 26, of Germantown has been chosen as one of the nine finalists for the online "Movie Making Challenge," part of the Fox TV show "On the Lot." The American Idol-esque reality show, produced by three-time Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg and reality TV pioneer Mark Burnett, is in the midst of its first season. The show, which airs Tuesdays on WHBQ-TV Channel 13 at 7 p.m., features a dwindling group of filmmakers competing for a development deal.

Gullet is not a contestant on the TV show; rather, he is participating in the at-home competition that allowed anyone to enter his or her own videos online through TheLot.com.

His short film, "Distortion," won week five -- horror week -- of the online challenge in which anyone could submit a two- to three-minute film for that week's genre or theme.

'Divine Manipulation ...' -- a review

It's nice to get a review, even if the reviewer didn't quite get it....

Excerpt:
"... this film is oddly endearing. ... It's a lot like neurosurgery. I don't know how it works, but I know it does."

Of course, if you want to be a reviewer, you should know how it works. That aside, it's an overall positive review.

Hey kids, let's make a movie...

Indie Memphis is looking for filmmakers 18 and younger to participate in its Southern Film Festival Youth Showcase.

Films should be 20 minutes or less and must have been completed in the past two years. There's no application fee.

Selected films will be shown at Studio on the Square during the Southern Film Festival, Indie Memphis' annual event highlighting movies with a distinct Southern flavor. The festival is October 19th-25th.

Deadline for submissions for the Youth Showcase is September 15th.

The 2007 Live From Memphis MUSIC VIDEO SHOWCASE announces a Call For Entries!

MEMPHIS (July 31, 2007) – Live From Memphis™ is announcing a “call for entries” for the 2007 Music Video Showcase.

LFM’s Music Video Showcase is part of the annual Indie Memphis Film Festival. Deadline for entries is September 14, 2007.

Selected music videos will be screened at Malco’s Studio on the Square and an award will be given for “Best Music Video/EPK.” (Indie Memphis dates: Oct. 19-25, 2007.) If you are a local filmmaker or local band with a music video – submit it now! Deadline for entries is September 14, 2007.

Corduroy Wednesday wants you, baby

Hello to the fine acting community of Memphis. May I ask you a question? Are you tired of having roles on your resume like "Janitor", "Guy in booth #3", and "Rosencrantz"?

Want some fire power to boost that resume with some "Wowzers!" kinda roles?

Corduroy Wednesday Films, makers of Grim Sweeper, are pleased to announce the production of ELVIS PRESLEY: TCB JUSTICE! This short film will be presented at the Lil Film Fest, a quad-annual Memphis event which features the King of Rock and Roll as its theme for this festival.

It's a five-minute short following the action packed adventures of Elvis & his TCB crew.

We are looking for the following roles: This film takes place in 1970.

Elvis Presley: Not yet fat, but he's got the long hair going.

Jerry Schilling & Sonny West: Caucasian males late 20 to 30s will do.

Frank Sinatra: Ole blue eyes himself.

Dean Martin: Need to play drunk well.

Sammy Davis Jr.: Glass eye not required.

Cybill Shepard: 20's Blonde & blonder.

Ann Margret: 20's to 30's Red Headed hottie.

And one Mr. Jerry Lawler, young Lawler, 20's. Have crown and tights, then we want to talk.

And as extras we need hippies, Black Panthers, and Vietnam War protestors (aka hippies with signs).

Also, anyone who can do a spot on Nixon voice. It's not onscreen but just some quick voice work only.

Shoot dates will be in August and predominantly on weekends. Check the word around town, Corduroy Wednesday is famous for working schedules out with talent and feeding actors on set.

Most roles will require only a day to two days of shooting. Elvis, Jerry, and Sonny may take longer. Also, if you have any costumes that will work (especially a Elvis jumpsuit, flower power outfits or Jerry Lawler crown and gear, we would love to hear form you.)

This project is not a paying gig, but wouldn't you like to say "Yeah my cool cats, I played Sammy Davis Jr. once, who wants an autograph?"

Hello from Alanna and Katherine (Do You Know Where Your Children Are? Productions)!
We would like to announce the auditions and open reading for our first feature-length movie on Tuesday, July 24 from 5PM to 8PM. Audtions will be at the MeDiA Co-op, 1000 S. Cooper.

The movie, which will be filmed this August, is a modern-day faerie tale which takes place amidst the trials and tribulations of high school. It is funny but serious.

There are roles in the movie for people of diverse ages and backgrounds. Some parts we are looking to cast include: a bumbling gym teacher, a frazzled mother, a well-meaning but dopey father, a success-oriented guidance counselor, several talkative Southern women, and an overly-enthusiastic student. Of course, we also need many high school age students who would be willing to act as extras in several classroom and party scenes. We also seek people willing to spend a day in the pool shooting a synchronized swimming sequence. We welcome experienced actors and those who have never acted before to join us in this project! In short, if the project sounds interesting to you, there is probably a part for you. If you would like to lend a hand with the boom mic or other technical aspects of filming, we would greatly appreciate that as well. It's a no-budget/no-profit movie, so there is no compensation.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW: The intensive Advanced Filmmaking Workshop will be held at the Ole miss -Oxford Depot and other supporting locations on the University of Mississippi campus. The workshop is designed to take high school and college students, teachers and other filmmaking enthusiasts to an advanced level of understanding and training in filmmaking. At the time of registration, a detailed schedule will be sent to registrants.

ENROLLMENT ELGIBILITY: Registration is open to anyone (high school to adult) who is already equipped with a basic understanding of filmmaking and is ideal for those who have previously completed the Ole Miss "introductory level" Filmmaking Workshop.

Kent Moorehead is an award winning and uniquely talented filmmaking professional who heads "Forever Young Productions, LLC" in Oxford, Mississippi. Kent was recognized for Best Documentary Film at the Crossroad Film Festival in 2005.

He works extensively as a director, cameraman and editor on films in both Europe and the US. In his 30 year career, he has worked on more than 150 projects, including feature films, music videos and documentaries. Over eighty of these films have been his own. Kent is one of a few exceedingly gifted filmmaking professionals who can work in all filmmaking positions.

He can effectively shoot while directing, interview while shooting and film with a plan for the editing. Kent's numerous other awards, honors, credits and vast filmmaking experience will undoubtedly contribute to another successful Ole Miss Filmmaking Workshop. Li'l Film Fest is a quarterly, theme-based film festival, focusing on highlighting our local talent while showcasing interesting happenings around town. Our goal is to encourage and inspire Memphis filmmakers while engaging a local audience in order to strengthen our artistic community.

"How does Li'l Film Fest work?" It's pretty easy. Basically, we here at LFM will pick a theme, then we'll announce that theme to you, and then you get to go out and make a short video (or film if you want to be fancy) using that theme - the rest of the content is up to you.

"Why is it a li'l fest?" Two reasons: One, we plan on having one every quarter - that's FOUR festivals a year. How fun is that? And two, when we say "li'l" we mean it - your film must be 5 minutes or less.

"Is there anything else I should know" Geez, you ask a lot of questions, but the answer is "Yes." There are 2 awards given at each festival, the "Audience Choice Award" and the "Jury Award" both of which receive a trophy and $200 in cash!! And if that's not enough incentive for you each winner has a guaranteed spot in the next Indie Memphis Film Festival! So keep that in mind when you're rolling those cameras.

Synopsis:

100 Lives is a story loosely based on the murders of 2006 in Memphis, TN. The story is
driven by the death of a teacher's daughter who is shot and becomes the 100th victim and
what he decides to do about it. After having an emotional breakdown, he chooses the
camera to avenge his daughter and in the end discovers that the greatest change that one

IFC Free Film Fest - Here! Send your shorts!!

The Memphis Flyer tells us this:

Memphis is among 10 cities chosen as destinations for the IFC Free Film Fest at the Memphis Pink Palace Museum running July 31st through August 2nd.

The outdoor film fest will screen uncut indies, including Raising Arizona, The Princess Bride, and Napoleon Dynamite. It's sponsored by the Independent Film Channel (IFC) and Comcast. Local filmmakers can have their shorts showcased at the Media Lab Lounge; films should be submitted to the web site below by July 20th.

The event, which features local filmmaker Craig Brewer, starts each night at 6 p.m.

Indie Memphis Micro Cinema Club #31: This month's edition of the long-running series showcases "The Southern 60 Second Video Festival," organized by Fugitive Projects of Nashville. The Crossroads Film Society and Hal & Mal's Red Room presents a screening of the award-winning Mississippi-made mockumentary "Glorious Mail" on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. in the Red Room at Hal and Mal's, 200 South Commerce St., Jackson, MS.

"Glorious Mail" is about a New York filmmaker who travels to the town of Sinnaville, Mississippi to shoot his thesis documentary about a flamboyant antique dealer and the community's reaction to his controversial new mailbox. Indie Memphis Film Festival -- Deadline is near

Deadlines are fast approaching for submission to Indie Memphis.

The application form can be found at the website www.indiememphis.com or at Withoutabox www.withoutabox.com. The “official” final deadline is July 16, but the special extended final deadline for filmmakers who submit through Withoutabox is July 31. Films submitted through WAB are entitled to a $5 discount off of the entry fee.

Indie Memphis takes place October 19-25 at Malco’s Studio on the Square. This will be its tenth anniversary of celebrating independent southern cinema. Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be awarded in 8 categories.

Last Train to Memphis -- July schedule

July's episode promises to be hotter than a gas soaked, cross eyed, redneck trying to light a cigarette with a blow torch. Starting with a behind the scenes documentary that features some well known bands before they hit it big, to another short film by the U of M shot on VHS in 1998. And, if you're old enough to remember and have been in Memphis long enough, we have the band from the 70's that rocked Memphis hard, Creed, with their song, Firecracker, to close the show. Our host for this month is the man, the myth, the legend, Jon W. Sparks.

Film project

The SouthEast Film Association and Movie Tao Productions are working on a
first of its kind project. It is cutting edge and likely to bring attention to participants.

Movie Tao Productions is working on a screenplay to be filmed and created
entirely by the SE Film Association and Movie Tao. The screenplay is going to incorporate a six-degrees-of-separation theme. The participating filmmakers will each be sent a scene from the script to film, cast and produce. The screenplay cannot change but the filmmaker can have the action and direction go however he or she wishes.

You do not have to go anywhere. Your location will be incorporated into the screenplay.

This is not going to be a paid production. It is strictly to help generate
awareness for the SE Film Association and the filmmakers that are involved.

We are not as of yet accepting headshots from actors as we do not have all of the
locations.

Memphis on Film -- new TV show

Victor D Lorthos recently started a new television program airing on CPN17, the Comcast public access channel, that is dedicated to interviewing people working in film and television at both professional and independent levels.

"Memphis On Film" airs each Wednesday at 9pm on channel 17, available in the Memphis metro area on Comcast cable. Website is www.memphisonfilm.com and Victor hopes to post online clips for internet streaming so people outside the viewing area can watch. The first show, airing in June, features Linn Sitler, the well-known Memphis & Shelby County Film Commissioner, and Jessica Powers, owner of Slacker Central Productions and producer/director of many fine movies. Followups with regular monthly shows will have interviews with more filmmakers and possibly also with updates on the movie biz with Linn.

Happy Anniversary LTTM!

One year ago this month it all started. LTTM aired episode 1 of the Shorts Fest on WYPL TV-18. Since that first episode, we have shown and premiered several great films, and helped start the Memphis Film Collection at the Memphis Public Library. We have had some memorable films grace our presence on the show over the last year, and we hope to see many more for years to come of Indie films and filmmakers here in Memphis. Our host for this month is the always lovely Nancy Ellen Mills. This month's films range from the artistic to the moronic and all are premiers for Memphis.

I am asked why? when so many people are trying to get out of Memphis and make way for California...well I can not afford to move so I just figure I will try to bring more outside opportunities here and create an outlet for local artist of all mediums. Feeling like a zombie? You're needed Saturday

We need people to play zombies. We're meeting at 1027 S. Rembert (the corner of Walker and Rembert) in Cooper-Young at 10am on saturday morning to get people in makeup, then we will drive to Hernando MS for the shoot (30 min drive).

The shoot will take several hours, so people would need to have the day free, but we will definately be done before dark. Anyone interested needs to wear the raggediest clothes they have, with no corporate logos or band names on them. These clothes will get messy with makeup and fake blood, so it's a good idea to bring a change of clothes for the ride home.

Got that film ready yet? Indie Memphis deadlines coming up

You've got two weeks to get your film in for the early deadline. You'll save some money if you do, but the final deadline is a couple of months down the line on July 16.

Entries for the 2007 festival are being accepted now. The Indie Memphis Soul of Southern Film Festival 2007 Entry Form and Rules

Festival Dates: October 19 - 25, 2007

Muvico Peabody Place Theaters in downtown Memphis

Deadlines for Entry: Postmarked June 1(early) or July 16 (late)

Entry Criteria:

The Indie Memphis film festival focuses on films of a “southern persuasion”; that is, films that have some connection to the American South. Some examples from past festivals include films made in the South or by Southern filmmakers, as well as films that deal with the Southern experience or themes/subjects that are particularly relevant to the South and Southerners.

All entries must have been completed in the past two years. In addition, IM gives priority to films that have not screened in Memphis over the past six months.

Screening Formats:

Formats accepted for exhibition are: 35mm, Betacam SP, DVD, and Mini DV. Films in 35 mm must have composite optical soundtracks.

Submission Tapes:

* Entries must be submitted prior to the entry deadline on VHS or DVD.
* All entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form, signed and dated with all information printed or typed clearly and completely. The Indie Memphis film festival is not responsible for incorrect wording in publications or on awards if the entry form is incorrect or not legible.
* All entries must be accompanied by a check or money order for the appropriate fee, made out to Indie Memphis. Entries not accompanied by a check or money order will not be considered.
* Each entry must be on a separate tape with an entry form and payment.
* Entrant’s name and address and the production’s title and running time must be on each CD/videotape. IMPORTANT.
* Do not submit works in progress or rough cuts.
* Do not include separate trailers, outtakes or bloopers as part of your film.
* Include with each entry a short synopsis of the film on a separate sheet, and one still photograph for use in the program (digital format preferred, if available).
* Screeners and still photographs will not be returned.
* Entries must be shipped pre-paid and in a suitable container. Insurance is the responsibility of the entrant. IM will confirm when the film has been received.
* Programming decisions will be made by early September, and we will notify all filmmakers promptly.

* Less than 30 minutes - $20
* 30 minutes or more - $30

Final deadline: July 16, 2007
* Less that 30 minutes - $25
* 30 minutes or more - $35

Competition and Awards:

Films will be accepted for competition in four categories:

Narrative short (less than 30 minutes in length)

Documentary

Experimental and Animation

Films made by Shelby County, TN, residents will also be eligible for the Hometowner Awards, sponsored by the Memphis and Shelby County Film & Television Commission.

All films will be eligible for The Ron Tibbett Excellence in Filmmaking Award.

Pitch in for an artist

Local artist John Ryan is one of this town's best, but he's having trouble moving around with a bad right ankle. He's made his living doing art and carpentry and odd jobs, but has no health insurance. This Saturday at 8 p.m., friends of Ryan will host "The 'No Walking Around Money' Fund-Raiser for John Ryan" at the old Masonic Temple at 614 National at Summer. The $25 admission entitles the purchaser to music and open bar and a chance to win a new 6- by 4-foot horse painting by Ryan (pictured). Extras needed Monday

The movie, Tear Drops, will be shooting Monday, May 7th from 6pm until about 12 midnight at Fire & Ice. All extras are needed for the shoot.
